What We Do
Educational Activities:
Organizing educational programs and seminars on African history, cultures, economies, and development: We plan and execute regular and occasional educational programs and seminars that delve into various aspects of African history, diverse cultures, economic landscapes, and pertinent development issues. These initiatives aim to deepen understanding, foster cultural appreciation, and promote awareness about Africa’s rich heritage and challenges.
Developing and promoting educational programs for African students, children, and parents: We create and promote educational programs specifically designed for African students, children, and parents. These programs aim to enhance language skills, foster cultural pride, and provide a comprehensive understanding of African culture and history. Through engaging and interactive methods, participants can gain knowledge, develop language proficiency, and strengthen their connection to their African roots.
Providing necessary support to meet the requirements of authorities: We extend support and assistance to meet the requirements set by immigration and settlement authorities, Saskatoon City Administration, and other settlement support providers. This can involve offering guidance on paperwork, facilitating access to resources and services, and providing cultural orientation. By doing so, WWK helps newcomers establish a strong foundation for their educational and personal development in their new community.
Facilitating skill-building workshops and vocational training: We conduct workshops and vocational training programs aimed at equipping individuals, especially youth and adults, with practical skills that enhance their employability and economic prospects. These workshops can cover a range of topics such as entrepreneurship, computer literacy, financial literacy, and vocational skills specific to local industries, providing participants with valuable knowledge and tools for personal and professional development.
Supporting access to educational resources and technology: We establish initiatives to bridge the digital divide and ensure access to educational resources and technology for underserved communities. This can involve collaborating with partners to develop and distribute educational materials, such as textbooks, e-books, or online learning platforms, to enhance learning opportunities for students who may not have easy access to such resources. In addition, we can offer access to digital devices and internet connectivity to African schools or community centers.
Supportive Activities:
Welcoming and comprehensive support services for newcomers: We extend a warm welcome to newcomers and offer a range of support services to assist them in adjusting to their new environment. This includes providing guidance on settlement processes, connecting them with essential resources such as housing, healthcare, education, and employment services, and offering emotional support and cultural orientation to help facilitate a smooth transition.
Free professional advisory services: We provide these free services to members, providing support in areas such as settlement support, legal consultation, driving instruction, assistance with completing applications, and acting as guarantors when necessary. These services aim to address the diverse needs of members and provide them with access to essential support without financial barriers.
Issuing supporting letters to governmental and non-governmental organizations: We offer assistance to members by issuing supporting letters to relevant organizations within Canada and abroad when they require additional documentation or support. These letters can help facilitate access to services, resources, or opportunities, enhancing members’ ability to navigate administrative processes and meet their specific needs.
Recognizing educational achievements: We acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of members whose children graduate from the university by providing gifts or small financial tokens. This recognition aims to motivate further educational pursuits and demonstrate support for members and their families in their educational journeys.
Implementing language improvement programs for African students, children, and parents: We design and implement specialized language improvement programs that cater to the needs of African students, children, and parents. These programs focus on enhancing language skills to facilitate effective communication and promote academic success. By supporting language development, WWK empowers individuals and strengthens their ability to thrive in their educational pursuits and broader community interactions.
- Offering mentorship and career guidance: We establish a mentorship program where experienced professionals from various fields provide guidance and support to members seeking career advice or professional development. Mentors can offer insights, share their expertise, and provide guidance on career pathways, job searching, and skill development, helping members maximize their potential.
Cultural Activities:
- Organizing diverse activities to nurture African identity and culture: We coordinate a wide range of activities aimed at nurturing African identity and culture among students, adults, families, and children. These activities can include performances, storytelling sessions, art classes, and cultural celebrations. By offering diverse opportunities for engagement, WWK fosters a strong sense of African identity and pride within the community.
- Promoting cross-cultural understanding through African cultural initiatives: We promote African culture, values, best practices, cuisine, music, and poetry by organizing events, workshops, or activities that encourage cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. These initiatives aim to bridge cultural gaps, encourage appreciation for diversity, and foster a sense of unity among individuals from different cultural backgrounds.
- Facilitating cultural exchange programs and artistic showcases: Facilitate cultural exchange programs that bring together the local community and African communities or individuals. We organize fairs, showcases, art exhibitions, or performances to highlight and celebrate African arts, crafts, music, dance, and other forms of cultural expression. These programs provide opportunities for cultural exchange, promote intercultural appreciation, and create platforms for African artists to share their talents and traditions.
- Arranging culturally immersive gatherings, trips, and outdoor activities: We arrange activities that align with the organization’s objectives and interests, with a focus on cultural immersion. These activities provide opportunities for individuals from different cultural backgrounds to come together, explore African culture firsthand, and build relationships and friendships based on shared experiences.
